Apache announced 2012Q1 as tentative date for first release
Earlier in 2011 the OpenOffice.org code base was donated to The Apache Software Foundation. In fact beyond the well known Office suite but also over a dozen other related open source projects licenced under the permissive Apache License 2.0 around OpenDocument Format, the internationally recognised Open Standard for documents developed by the OASIS Open Document Format for Office Applications [OpenDocument] Technical Committee).
In an open letter to the community the project has announced that it has tentatively identified the first quarter of 2012 for a Version 3.4 release under the new name Apache OpenOffice.
Currently Apache OpenOffice (Incubating) is progressing well as a podling in the Apache Incubator with a growing community and project infrastructure (see http://incubator.apache.org/projects/openofficeorg.html).
